Grab n' Go Meals

The Issue

Unsheltered youth in Seattle face daily hunger without safe access to food—Amrita-Seattle is here to change that.

In Seattle, hundreds of youth and young adults experience homelessness every year. Many live in encampments like Share/Wheel Tent City, where access to basic necessities such as food, kitchens, or safe storage simply doesn’t exist.

For these young people, food insecurity is a daily crisis:

  • Meals are inconsistent and unreliable.

  • Nutritious food is especially hard to find without cooking facilities.

  • Traditional meal programs can feel unwelcoming, stigmatizing, or inaccessible due to transportation barriers.

The result is that unsheltered youth often face chronic hunger, poor health, and overwhelming stress, making it even harder to focus on long-term goals like education, employment, or stable housing.

Amrita-Seattle’s Grab n’ Go Meals program directly addresses this gap by providing consistent, ready-to-eat meals that meet immediate needs while honoring dignity and accessibility. By reducing the daily burden of hunger, we give young people the foundation to focus on healing, growth, and building a brighter future.

Our Approach

At Amrita-Seattle, we believe no young person should have to wonder where their next meal will come from. That’s why we provide Grab n’ Go Meals to unsheltered youth and young adults and youth living in Share/Wheel Tent City and surrounding communities. Through partnerships with reputed local organizations like Teen Feed, ROOTS Shelter, Sophia Way, and Share/Wheel Tent Cities (TC 3 and TC4), Amrita-Seattle delivers more than just meals.

Why This Program Matters

Youth experiencing homelessness face enormous challenges. Without safe housing, many lack access to kitchens, refrigeration, or consistent income. As a result, they often go without reliable, nutritious meals. For young people still growing—physically, mentally, and emotionally—this food insecurity has lasting consequences.

Amrita-Seattle's Grab n’ Go Meals program offers:

  • Reliable nourishment – Healthy, ready-to-eat meals that do not require cooking or storage.

  • Low-barrier access – No forms, no requirements, just food when it’s needed most.

  • Youth-centered support – A safe, welcoming approach that honors dignity and reduces stigma.

Meeting Needs Where They Are

Residents of Share/Wheel Tent City and other unsheltered youth often face barriers in accessing traditional food programs, from limited transportation to long wait times. Grab n’ Go meals are designed to be portable, immediate, and practical—meeting young people exactly where they are.

Beyond Food: Building Stability

A meal is more than just calories. It is:

  • A step toward better health and wellbeing, reducing the risks of malnutrition and illness.

  • A source of relief and dignity, easing the daily stress of survival.

  • A bridge to future support, helping youth connect with housing, healthcare, and education resources.

By addressing the urgent need for food security, Amrita-Seattle’s Grab n’ Go Meals program creates space for hope and healing—one meal at a time.

How it Works

Amrita-Seattle's Grab n' Go Meal Program operates every Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM, this program delivers nutritious, ready-to-eat meals to various locations, including SHARE/WHEEL Tent Cities, Tiny Cabins Safe Harbor, ROOTS Shelter, and Teen Feed.

Each weekend, volunteers prepare and distribute 60 individually packed meal bags containing items like sandwiches, granola, protein bar, fruits, snacks, and beverages. These meals are designed to be easily accessible and require no preparation, ensuring that recipients can have a nourishing meal regardless of their circumstances.
